Condado de Huelva Vinegar
The Designation of Origin Condado de Huelva (Denominación de Origen) was extended to include its white-wine vinegars, made with wine from the same D.O. This historic move makes Condado vinegars only the third Designation of Origin in all of Europe to receive coverage.
While not new to the market by any means (historical documents from the mid-18th century show evidence of Condado vinegars being exported to Russia and England), Regulating Council members and producers alike hope this monumental decision will lead to increased international recognition. Interest shown from countries such as France and Germany gives them hope that they will be successful in expanding their sales within the European Union. However, the immediate goal of the Denominación de Origen Condado de Huelva is to increase distribution of their products throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
This year is expected to bring the first vintage of young and old Condado de Huelva vinegar, which will, at first, be produced by six wineries. The Regulating Council is hoping to increase the number of wineries to a maximum of twelve or thirteen within the next few years.
Antonio Moscoso Sánchez, the Subdirector of the Designations of Quality (including Designations of Origin) and Interprofessional and Contractual Relations for the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, emphasized the importance of a wine-based vinegar being considered a food product worthy of receiving Designation of Origin coverage. He also noted the importance of being able to trace the making of Condado vinegars, since official certification of the origin of food products is becoming increasingly important to consumers. Moscoso believes that the European Union approval of D.O. Vinagre Condado de Huelva will mark a new beginning for the D.O., with increased international projection.
Finally, Manuel Infante, President of the Regulating Council of the Designation of Origin Condado de Huelva wine and vinegar, highlighted the record time it took the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and Food Stuffs to approve the D.O., a reflection of the quality and uniqueness of one of the world´s greatest vinegars.
